Hedges originated in several ways, but are oftent the ‘ghosts’ of ancient woodlands.

In conservation terms old hedges of high quality are of great importance. They provide self contained habitats and also act as wildlife corridors, allowing animal species to move along them, linking wooded areas and preventing isolation.

The usefulness of a hedge varies in relation to the diversity of plant and animal species it supports and its thickness and structure.

The eco watch team ares taking part in a hedge laying programme to improve the quality of the Dartington stock.
