Schumacher College was established in 1991 on the Estate and since then has engaged thousands of people in addressing the most pressing social and environmental concerns of modern life. Participants come from around the world to enjoy the unique transformative learning experience offered by the staff, the exceptional visiting teachers and fellow students at Schumacher College. Those that have benefited from their time at the College include economists, business leaders, educators, scientists and politicians.

Much of the College activity focuses around the residential short courses which are run from four days to three weeks on a rolling programme, eleven months of the year. Courses from the current programme include Business Responses to Climate Change, Can the Earth Survive Capitalism?, Inspired Leadership and Creating Nature: Art in the landscape.

Open evenings are held by Schumacher College in and around Dartington Estate and Totnes where eminent teachers from the College short courses share their work with members of the local community. Many of these events are held in collaboration with Transition Town Totnes. Speakers have included: Vandana Shiva, Environmental Activist, Michael Dixon, Chair of the NHS Alliance, Tony Juniper, Executive Director of Friends of the Earth, and many more.

Also run through Schumacher College is the popular MSc in Holistic Science which provides students with a modular introduction to key topics, the chance to engage with College short courses and an opportunity to specialise through submission of a dissertation later in the year.

The College is currently developing further progressive short courses, published works, and several new year-long full and part-time courses. A Certificate of Education will enable participants to develop their own educational approach from the experiences and ideas shown at Schumacher College. It is hoped that many will go on to establish their own pioneering institutions around the globe. A Masters in Design is also in preparation, which will engage students in exploring natural systems and the earth through new design paradigms.
