ecology

Believing that environmental protection and economic development should be complementary goals, Dartington supports educational programmes in ecology that promote sustainable ways of living for individuals and communities, leading to responsible environmental policies for institutions.

The Trust's aim of promoting and living out an ecological world-view is undertaken by organisations such as Schumacher College, founded in 1991 on the conviction that a new vision is needed for society, its values and its relationship to the earth. Over the last decade the College has become a centre of excellence with an international reputation for the inspiration, quality and breadth of its teaching.

The woodlands and conservation department of the Trust focuses on optimising the ecological value of the lands around the estate, improving the amenity and aesthetic qualities whilst paying due regard to the impact on the local landscape and practising appropriate silviculture. Its work has been recognised by two awards.

ecowatch is a new project set up by The Dartington Hall Trust, designed to encourage people from the local community and beyond, to enhance their local environment through active conservation. They organise weekly volunteer events throughout the year on the diverse and ecologically important Dartington Hall Estate.
